Berserk Boy has been announced for PC, Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S, and it’s coming in Q4 2022.
The 2D, retro-styled action-platformer is inspired by the look and feel of classic Sega Mega Drive games, but aims to bring it up to date for modern machines – and it lives up to that old/new mixture with a soundtrack composed by Sonic Mania’s Tee Lopes. You can check out a trailer below:
Berserk Boy stars Kei, a hero who can absorb the power of five elements – Lightning, Fire, Earth, Air, and Ice – using them to change form and gain new abilities, not unlike Mega Man. The platforming is combined with 2D action, and building fluid combos will allow each elemental form to use a special attack. Debut developer BerserkBoy Games also promises ability upgrades, alternate paths, hidden collectibles, and more.
The team also promises an authentic-looking retro-inspired game: “Getting the aesthetic right is absolutely paramount. As a team, and from any player feedback we’ve had so far, we believe we’re on-track for capturing that old-school Sega vibe,” says studio founder Zu Ehtisham. “We want to nail the ‘feel’ so it’s satisfying to play, and to strike the right balance between fun and challenge. It’s important players can complete the game, and feel like a superhero while they’re doing it.”

The game is being developed by a six-person team spread across Japan, the US, the UK, and Indonesia, and has been working on the game since 2019
